External Backup Drives – Why they aren’t ‘all that’.

Hi Friends,

External drives, backup drives, expansion drives… There are many names for them, but what are they good for and what don’t they do very well.

I have found that many people will use an external backup drive to hold more documents, pictures or videos. Just like internal drives, when the hard drive crashes, you may lose all of your data.

Even if you are using it as a backup drive and backup drive only, you are putting your data at risk. This drive is generally in the same area as your computer. If you get a power surge, it can damage both the hard drive in your PC, as well as the external drive. If there is a fire, flood, theft, or other disaster, you can lose all of your data.

Just like your internal drive, your external drive can be infected with Malware (Adware, Viruses, Trojans, etc.). If both your original files as well as the backups are infected, you may lose all of your data.

I recommend you use an online backup service like Crashplan. Crashplan is very affordable and is a well-respected online backup company.
